Ice in the Tropics & SCLE Session #5 (Nov 19, 2017)

Canadian Alumni Singapore (CA-S), in partnership with the High Commission of Canada, celebrated ICE IN THE TROPICS, a month of Arctic-themed activities celebrating Canada 150 and Finland 100, at the National Museum of Singapore.

Over 200 attended including special guests from High Commission of Canada, Her Excellency Lynn Macdonald, Chairman of CA-S Guong Ching Tan, CA-S board members Er Kwong Wah, Soo Lim Ping, Wah Geok Shum, President of CA-S Michael Chan and Evelyn Wong, the architect of SCLE.

Sparkling wine and snacks were enjoyed for all - alumni, family and friends all socialized and had a great Sunday afternoon.

It started with the SCLE series, an astounding story of character, resilience and discovery from Toh Poh Joo (PJ), Vice-President, Airport Operations Management, Changi Airport Group, a Singaporean who left his corporate and family life in tropical Singapore to battle minus 40 degrees Arctic winter - not once, not twice, but three times - challenging himself to more than just complete a 566km ultra marathon race across the icy tundra for more than self-satisfaction.

Immediately after, PJ had a lively conversation with a panel of Canadian alumni discussants - Dr Teo-Koh Sock Miang (U of Alberta) President of Special Olympics, Hema Nadarajah (U of Toronto/PhD student, U of British Columbia), a young Singaporean researcher in Arctic geopolitics & climate change, and Michael Broadhead (U of Alberta), the founding director of EarthFest Singapore.

The day ended with exclusive premier screening of 2 award-winning Arctic Film -"The Sun At Midnight" & "Poles Apart” (voice over by Helena Bonham Carter), brought to you by CA-S, with the support of the High Commission of Canada. Special guest, Singaporean producer Ser En Low, joined us for a conversation of her film ” Poles Apart”

Thank you to everyone who attended, supported and volunteered to make it a wonderful afternoon!
